Social Studies
We are talking about are families and our traditions. We are learning about many different winter holidays too. Our tree is in the process of being decorated with candles (tradional in Ireland and Germany), origami lanterns (Japan) candy canes (USA), gingerbread men/women (USA), cotton (brazil), hearts (Denmark), and more! Stop by to see the tree when you can.
We are learning where we are from (city, country, and continent), what languages we speak, and what makes each of us special.
Check out our Social Studies Wall. We are from all over the world!
Here we are making our Ramandan Fanous (Lanterns).
BUILDING A CLASSROOM COMMUNITYThis unit is an ongoing study and a work in progress. We are working on building a community that we trust, feel safe in, respect, care for, and can learn from. We are also talking about peace and trying to live and work peacefully in the classroom.
Here are the rules we came up with as a class:
1. Be safe. 2. Be responsible. 3. Be respectful. 4. Clean up materials when you are done with them. 5. Be friends. 6. Help each other. 7. Respect nature. 8. Be kind with your words. 9. Be nice. Share and take turns. 10. Stand up for others in need. 11. Play nicely everywhere.
We will be learning how to use the "Traffic Light" to solve problems.
Red Light Means: stop and calm down. Yellow Light Means: think of a plan on how to solve your social problem. Green Light Means: go and try out your plan.
Problem Solving Strategies we can use: 1. Walk away/ignore. 2. Use your I sentence and talk it out. 3. Ask a friend for help. 4. Ask an adult for help.
"I don't like it when__________ because__________"
"I feel __________ when/because___________"
We will also talk about how words can be hurtful. Soon we will learn to distinguish between speech bubbles and thought bubbles. Words that are okay to say out loud for others to hear, and words that can be hurtful and should therefore stay in our heads as a thought.
