During the first trimester, the Grade 5 students at Cairo American College looked at American history through the lens of freedom. They learned about different groups of people who have existed in America and the situations in which they lived. Did they lose, gain, or maintain their freedom? What factors contributed to their unique situations (i.e. culture, innovation, conflict, etc.).

The first groups that we studied were some of the Native American tribes that lived in America before and during early European settlement in America.

Later on, students learned to write feature articles. The articles focused on different elements of freedom, such as methods for gaining freedom or people who fought for freedom.

A study of the thirteen original colonies provided background knowledge from which to study early American history, as well as, a means for learning research methods, nonfiction writing skills, structure, and organization.

Students in our reading class integrated all these reading, research, and writing skills as they pretended to be real characters in early American history. Taking on the personas of well-known Patriots and English leaders, students wrote autobiographies in first person.
