Ramadan considerations for PE

  • Students are expected to be in class, dressed out, and participating. We don't change what is expected but we do adapt activities when it is hot out there and particularly when there are those who are fasting. We are modifying conditioning and fitness testing to allow for fasting students to complete the assessments after Ramadan with no problem.

The Elementary school will be swimming from Tuesday August 18- September 23 and all students are expected to participate as usual, though swimming fitness activities requiring stamina will be modified to accommodate for students who are fasting as is the case with other PE activities.

We are also doing the following:

Classes in the afternoons are held outside for half the period, the other half inside an air conditioned space, breaks in the shade are given along with an opportunity to put water on their heads or faces.

Fitness activities outside are rescheduled to the morning and running is minimized to game activities and a warm up only.

Any fitness testing (particularly running or the beep test) would be optional and postponed for students who are fasting unless they wanted to do it with the rest of the class.

Conditioning for Sit-ups, push-ups, sit and reach, pull-ups should be done inside and when it's cool.

Teachers who are scheduled for activities inside are cooperating and sharing spaces with classes which are scheduled for outside.

Any student needing to go to the health office is allowed to go, as usual.

Students are not "excused from PE" with or without a note as per our regular considerations. No one should be sitting around not participating with their street clothes on. As usual, we have clean loaner clothes available, including shoes and swimsuits if students forget. Students new to CAC or new to the MS (6th graders) and their parents will need to be made aware of the expectations and cooperation is usually forthcoming after they get to know the program and what is expected.

For any individual questions, please have the parents contact their student's teacher for specific information. We are compassionate and flexible, but we also want to encourage the students to hold up their responsibilities for fasting and continuing on with life as much as normal so that they will receive the blessings they are due according to their beliefs.
