Increased global interdependence is producing a renewed emphasis on cultivating international understanding through effective and meaningful communication. Due to rapid advances in technology and increased human interaction we are more aware of the need to be multi-lingual citizens of the 21st century. Foreign Language learning is a means to ensure active participation of students as citizens of the world; it is the right and responsibility of all students to develop the linguistic and cultural knowledge necessary for participation. Therefore, Foreign Language learning at CAC is founded on the following beliefs:

· All students can be successful language learners. Their knowledge of the target language culture and their understanding of their own language and culture are thereby enhanced.

· Students are individuals who learn in a variety of ways and settings and acquire proficiency at varied rates.

· Language and culture education incorporates a variety of effective strategies, assessment procedures and technologies that develop and enhance higher order thinking skills that meet the needs of students with different learning styles.

· The essence of foreign language learning is communication. With the development of a strong linguistic background such communication empowers students to meet the needs of an increasingly interdependent world.

· The study of foreign language develops abilities to connect with other disciplines and to enhance career opportunities.

· The learning of a foreign language is a lifelong process.

· The CAC Foreign Language program prepares the students to be open-minded, multi-lingual citizens of a global community at the beginning of a new millennium.

GOALS

The CAC Foreign Language Department, in accordance with the philosophy and National Standards set forth by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, focuses on authenticity and level-appropriate communicative fluency. Therefore the various FL sequential courses will enable students:

1. To understand a foreign language as it is spoken by native speakers.

2. To express themselves within the range of their language experience in a manner acceptable to native speakers.

3. To read with understanding.

4. To express themselves in writing.

5. To understand and appreciate the culture and literature of the countries where the target language is spoken.
