Hannukah( Festival of Lights )
The Hebrew word Hanukkah means " dedication." When the sacred temple Menorah was relit, there was only enough oil to burn for one day. But, tradition has it that the oil miraculously lasted eight days until more purified oil could be found. In remembrance, a candle is lit each of the eight days of Hanukkah. You will also see this holiday spelled Chanukkah .
Shira's parents came over to share how they traditionally celebrate Hanukkah. They brought in Mennorahs to show us how it's done.
Shirah's father asked KGD what they know about Hanukkah. KGD knows a lot. Very smart students. One of our own KGD students talking about the history of Hanukkah. Very knowledgeable!
Shirah's parents were very impressed.
Then he showed us how it is done. We all have to stand up to show respect to God when we do the ritual.
KGD was very respectful of other people's traditions and culture.
Then, Shirah started lighting the first candle.
We all took turns.
This is how they write our names in Hebrew.
They brought in dreidels for us to make and play with. This is one of the games that they play to celebrate this festival. On top of each Dreidel are the words, " Big Miracle is Here!!!" ( In Hebrew).
First, Shirah's father showed us two ways of spinning a a Dreidel.
Then, it was Shirah's turn to show her skill.
Shirah's mom brought in some Hanukkah food to share with us. It tasted like doughnuts.
Each of us got a Dreidel toy with chocolate candies in it.
