THE SCHOOL BOARD 2009/2010

 


NIVINE CAPTAN-AMR (Board Chair) joined the Board as an elected Community Representative (2005-2007), stayed on as Board-appointed representative (2007- 2009), and has been re-elected by the community this year to serve another two-year term (2009-2011). For fourteen years, Ms. Captan-Amr has served on a multitude of CAC bodies and committees, including PTO, REACH and CAT. She formed the Multicultural Committee in 2000. She and her husband Yehia have three children; the youngest is currently in High School, the older two are CAC alumni: class of 2004 and class of 2008.

CINDY CLARKE (Secretary) was re-elected to the Board as an elected Community Representative for the two-year term (2009-2011). Ms. Clarke is a former teacher who has previously served on school boards in Harare, Zimbabwe, Abidjan, Cote d'lvoire and Dakar, Senegal. She and her husband Tom Walter have three children, one in High School and two CAC alumni: class of 2006 and class of 2009.

MARK TURNER (Treasurer) joined the Board in June 2007 as the Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 (NAMRU-3) representative. Dr. Turner serves as the Executive Officer of NAMRU-3 and is board certified in nephrology and internal medicine. He and his wife, Dr. Sybil Tasker, have two children attending CAC, one in Middle School and the other in High School.

CHRIS NEHRING joined the Board in July 2005 as the BP representative. Mr. Nehring is the drilling manager for GUPCO operations. He has had a varied international career within BP, with strong background in business development and project management. He and his wife Helen have two daughters attending CAC, one in Middle School and the other in High School.

DOLORES BROWN joined the Board in August 2007 as the U.S. Embassy's representative. Counselor for Management at the Embassy, she has been in the U.S. Foreign Service since 1985 and has served as Deputy Director of the Operations Center, the Secretary of State’s 24/7 duty office, and as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Estonia. Past postings have included Belgium and South Africa in various management and consular capacities. Previous to the Foreign Service, Mrs. Brown was Associate Director of Admissions at Barnard College of Columbia University, where she was responsible for foreign and transfer student admissions. Dolores has two sons, Richard, who attends university, and Will who is a High School student at CAC.

HODA SAROFIM-SAWIRIS joined the Board in June 2008 as a Community Representative for the two-year term (2008-2010). Hoda holds a B.Sc. from Cairo University and an MBA from AUC. She was the pro bono executive director of the Sawiris Foundation, and now is active in philanthropic and social development projects.
She is a member of the Women’s Leadership Board (WLB) of Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and also a member (Friend) of the Suzanne Mubarak Women’s International Peace Movement. Hoda has three children, one in High School, one CAC alumnus class of 2007 attending the University of Chicago, and an alumnus of the German school attending l’Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne.

MAHA ELSHINNAWY joined the Board in June 2007 as the AUC representative. Dr. ElShinnawy is a Professor of Management in the School of Business, Economics, and Communication at the American University in Cairo. She and her husband Ahmed have three children, two in Elementary School and a CAC alumnus class of 2008.

MARY MARLOWE joined the Board in June 2008 as a Community Representative for the two-year term (2008-2010). Mary became a community volunteer when her family moved to Saudi Arabia in 1994. Since then, she has served in various volunteer and elected positions in six different countries, not only in the schools her children have attended, but also in the Boy Scouts, in two US Embassy recreation associations, in several sports programs, and in her church. Mary and her husband David have three children, two attending CAC, one in High School, one in Elementary School, and one in college in the States.

JOHN HENDRIX joined the Board in June 2009 as the American Business Representative. Mr. Hendrix is the General Manager/Managing Director of Qarun Petroleum Company for Apache Egypt Companies since 2006. He and his wife, Candace, have two children: Lauren who attends university in the US and Adam who is a High School student at CAC.

YOUSSEF BOUTROS-GHALI was re-appointed to the Board for a two-year term (2009-2011). Dr. Boutros-Ghali is at present the Minister of Finance. He held a number of ministerial posts since 1993 as well as a number of advisory and teaching positions. He and his wife Michele have children attending CAC
