PSAT/NMSQT and PLAN On October 12th, the Juniors (11th grade students) will take the PSAT and the Sophomores (10th grade students) will take the PLAN. What do the letters stand for and why are they important? The PSAT is a preliminary SAT. The SAT is a standardized test required by many universities around the world as part of the application process. Juniors take the PSAT to practice for the SAT. The PSAT also gives American citizens the opportunity to enter the NMSC scholarship program. More information about the test can be found at www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/about.html. The PLAN is practice for the ACT. The ACT is a standardized test also required by many universities as part of the application process. In addition to giving students practice for the ACT, the PLAN provides an interest inventory which can help guide the selection of college majors and careers. More information can be found at www.actstudent.org/plan/index.html. In preparation for either test, students should get a good night sleep and eat a healthy breakfast. On test day, students need to bring two #2 pencils, an eraser and a calculator. The tests should be taken seriously in order to give students, their parents and CAC an accurate picture of the student’s abilities. The results of both tests are not reported to universities. Results are shared with the students, parents and counseling department. They are used to help guide CAC students in course selection, determining strengths and weaknesses and exploring majors and careers. The High School Counseling department wishes all 10th and 11th grade students all the best on October 12th.
