Elementary Express
February 2, 2007 CAT Meeting Minutes - January 2007 (PDF)
PRINCIPAL'S NOTEHello Everyone, Welcome to February! We have a lot packed into this week's edition of our Elementary Express, so please be sure to take some extra time and mark down the dates and times of all the upcoming events within our school community. February is sure to keep you busy and we look forward to seeing you throughout the month at our various activities. Let us begin by reminding you that next week is an abbreviated week due to a teacher's Professional Development day on Wednesday Feb.7 and a CAC Holiday on Feb. 8. This means that there will be no school for CAC students on Wednesday or Thursday of next week. We would also like to inform you that due to the shortened week there will be no Elementary Express published next week. You can look forward to our next edition on Thursday, February 15. Our Elementary CAT members have been very busy working on a number of initiatives and I would like to applaud and thank this wonderful group of people for their dedication and efforts. At our meeting this week CAT members discussed the results of the Sunday Sampler lunch menu items. It was decided that the new Sunday hot lunch menu will include Fried Rice two Sundays a month and Sausage with Mashed Potatoes and Green Beans on the alternative Sundays. Both of these items were highly rated by our students and preferred to the previous baked potato selection. It is also important to extend our thanks to Max our caterer for his flexibility and assistance in our search for new menu options. CAT members have also been busy planning a Parent Forum to be presented February 12 from 7:00 - 9:00p.m. More information on this event can be found below. More details of our CAT meeting are included in our minutes which will be included in our next edition of the EE. A reminder as noted in last week's EE all grade 3 students as well as grade 4 & 5 students who are new to our school will write the CogATs on Sunday, February 4. There is no preparation necessary for these tests except for the usual good night's sleep and some breakfast before the tests. Read more in our “Conselor's Corner” below. One exciting note is the upcoming Egypt Day Assembly on Feb.15. Our Egypt Culture teachers have been working extremely hard on this big event and I, for one being new to Egypt, am really looking forward to being immersed in the songs and dances of the magnificent color and culture of Egypt. Finally, your youngest child will bring home spring Parent Teacher Conference information on Sunday, February 4. Please look for it and return to your youngest child's teacher by Sunday, February 11 so we can schedule your appointments. Have a wonderful weekend and I hope you take the opportunity to plan some fabulous family events for your extended long weekend that is coming up next week. Regards, Seamus Marriott
Sustainability Tip Over the past several months numerous groups of people at CAC have been discussing and implementing new initiatives towards raising our collective awareness of the need to make our campus more environmentally friendly. In an effort to support our Green initiative and raise awareness on ways to reduce, reuse and recycle, we have decided to launch a new weekly feature in our EE entitled – Sustainability Tip . Our CAT members have supplied the first of what we hope will be many tips on ways that we all can help to ensure a green future for our CAC Community. Stay tuned for future tips supplied by our students as they explore and investigate ways to “Go Green.” Sustainability Tip #1 The use of re-usable lunch or sandwich containers as opposed to zip-lock bags in home packed lunches will reduce our waste and save you money!

Important Dates
Counselors' Corner
Beginning on February 4th, the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) will be administered to students in grades 3 through 5 (exempting students who have previously taken the CogAT and students who are in CAC's ESL program). The CogAT is a standardized test that measures general thinking and problem-solving skills that students have learned through in-school and out-of-school experiences. In combination with other relevant information, teachers use results to adapt instruction in ways that enhance the students' success in learning. We will send individual student scores home to parents in April, as soon as they are available. If you have questions about the CogAT, please contact the Elementary Counseling Office. Thank you, Lisbeth Anderson

100's DAY SCHEDULE
PE/KIDS' DAY UPDATE Please look for a Kids' Day Volunteer form in your youngest or only child's bag today (goldenrod in color). We hope you'll be able to help us on February 28th. In PE we will begin our Track & Field Unit on Sunday in PE classes. We will be outside, so please dress your child in layers, so as the day warms up, they can remove unwanted articles of clothing and still remain comfortable. Labeling clothing with name and class code is a must! Thanks!
Students should be encouraged to do their best on the ITBS as they should for all school activities. However, it could be harmful to place too much emphasis on the tests, or to make students feel anxious or stressful about the outcomes. By maintaining a typical schedule and atmosphere at home, you can help your child have a positive testing experience. Your child cannot prepare for this test by studying. However, student performance can be enhanced if the student has a good night's rest and a healthy breakfast. It is important for your child to be present and on time each day. Test make-up days, set aside for students who miss portions of the test due to illness, are February 25th – 27th. The ITBS results provide information for parents and teachers about a student's academic performance as compared to a US population of the same grade. Test results should be available in April. Testing is only one indicator of achievement. By looking at a student's performance over several years, and comparing test results to teacher reports, one can get a more accurate picture of a student's overall achievement.
BUILDING BRIDGES TOWARDS YOUR CHILD'S INDIVIDUAL AND UNIQUE NEEDS The ES CAT committee would like to invite you for an introductory forum regarding THE STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES AND RESOURCES. on Monday, the 12th of February, from 7 to 9 in Room 600. Many of us are parents of children who face individual challenges which require special attention and guidance from appropriately trained professionals. In the hurly burly of our nomadic and mobile lives we are not always sure of how to identify these needs or meet them. This forum was inspired by three mothers on the CAT committee who had found themselves in this position. In our advisory role as CAT members we learned that there were many more parents in this predicament. We hope that this gathering will be the first step towards being able to meet some of the professionals within the school and in the Maadi community who could help our children meet the challenges they face. The second half of the meeting will be an Open Floor for questions and discussions with the representative panel and each other. We hope that parents will express their concerns and needs. If it is possible to address any of these through a series of such seminars it'll be our pleasure to do so. This invitation is extended to include parents in the whole school. Hope to see you there - you can make the difference to your child's life and happiness.
