PRIME Week Desert Trips

The Desert ecology treks are an exciting way for students to develop and nurture an awareness, and appreciation for the natural world. When in the Desert students soon realize that this is their classroom for a week. But this room has sand dunes for walls, deserts treks and reefs for a floor and the stars for a ceiling. The student / teacher ratio is kept at 10 to 1, allowing students to take full advantage of the attention given to them by teachers. Questions are encouraged and expected while team work prevails in safely exploring the reefs, desert terrain and mountains found in this unique and fascinating environment. Wadi Kid

Through observation and a hands-on approach, students get involved as activists. They will seek to develop an awareness and appreciation of the ecosystem of Egypt's Western Desert with an emphasis on:

  • Coexistence of animal and plant life
  • Migration patterns of birds in Egypt
  • Seasonal variations of organisms
  • Impact of humans on the desert environment
  • Future dangers to the desert environments
  • Preventative measures for reducing the deleterious effects of human impact upon the desert ecosystem
  • Political and sociological approaches to environmental protection and conservation strategies in Egypt and around the world
  • Appreciation of Bedouin desert culture and the role that it plays in this fragile ecology.
