In Le tour du Monde en 80 jours, Philéas
Fogg travels through the north of the Indian subcontinent from
Bombay, now Mumbai, right accross to Calcutta on the East coast,
going through Allahabad and the village of Kholby; his party is
subjugated by the splendours and strangeness of this country.
Indeed, it has an ancient and varied culture, worthy of exploration
and understanding.
During the 19th century, when trade routes were
being traveled for economic gain, merchant ships carried back
in their holds full of spices, silk, cotton, silver and other
riches, wondrous stories from that distant exotic land.
