Drawing and Painting


Beginning

Description: This foundation course is designed to develop the students’ interest and skills in drawing and painting. Students explore different subjects using a variety of materials including pencil, charcoal, pastel, tempera, watercolor, acrylic, and oil paint. Emphasis is placed on the elements of design and composition. Grading of work is related to an individual student’s performance and progression. Students keep sketchbooks and are required to record and discuss their ideas and artwork. Past and present artworks are introduced for inspiration and appreciation. Throughout the year the students’ artwork is displayed in the school.

Credit: 1 per year
Length of course: 1 year

*Due to high cost of some materials, students may be asked to provide/purchase sketchbooks/materials/tools at their own expense and also pay a studio fee.

Intermediate

Description: This course is a continuation of the program developed in the foundations of drawing and painting course. Emphasis is placed on the individual student’s advancement in techniques and his/her personal interpretation of the elements of design and composition. Students keep sketchbooks and are encouraged to record and discuss their ideas and artwork.

Prerequisite: Drawing and Painting I or art background

Advanced

Description: This is an advanced course in drawing and painting for students who have taken Intermediate Drawing and Painting and are interested in continuing to develop their own work of their choice of media and style. Students are expected to initiate their own projects and to keep a sketchbook. Instruction is conducted primarily on an individual basis with some group critiques. This course is recommended for students who are interested in submitting an Advanced Placement Portfolio in their senior year.
