Haidong Gumdo

1. founder, when, origin, Reason

Haidong Gumdo (Kumdo in Japanese), is a modern martial art which, tracing back to the third-Century, was originally a sword fighting technique called Jangbaekryu founded by army General Yu Yu, who used it for the soldiers in his army. The martial art itself began around 1982 in Korea in the ancient kingdom of Kokuryo. It was founded by Saul-Bong-Sun-In who understood the principles and secrets of the sword. The name 'Haidong' came from 'Haidong Sungguk Parhae,' which means 'Parhae, the flourishing country in the East'. 'Gumdo' means the way of the sword. Haidong Gumdo refers to traditional Korean martial art of swordsmanship, and literally means “The ‘Light’ of the sword as the ‘Energy’ rising up in the morning in the Eastern Sea.”

Haidong Gumdo is supposed to be a martial art which helps develop and train the mind and body (loyalty, courtesy, justice, faithfulness, intelligence, and virtue,) and spirit, It can also increase a person’s flexibility and strength and requires a sharp mental focus, to be able to control the sword, to cut and be used in combat drills.
