KarateOriginKarate is a martial arts that originated in Okinawa, a Japanese island, it is a combination of the okinawan fighting methods and Chinese martial arts. No one knows how it got to Okinawa though there are legends that it came from the shaolin monks in china, and when they fled destruction, some of the monks came to live in Okinawa and trained some of the people there. The monks were trained in the legend by a monk called bodhidharma, who learned some techniques from warriors in India, that is how it is rumored karate, and martial arts in general started. Karat means china, te means hand. The schools karate was taught at were called dojos. Now in modern karate there are ranks to determine the skill of the person which was taken from judo. TenentsThe main tenants in karate are discipline, honor confidence and perseverance. There are many different types of karate, and 1 of them is called shotokan karate, this means that physical skill is as important or less important then improvements in character and mental discipline. A very important tenant, not just in karate, but in all martial arts was that you could not be angry an old okinawan proverb says that karate and anger don’t mix “ when your hand goes out, withdraw you anger; when your anger goes out, withdraw your hand.”. The main styles of karate are: Shotokan, Shito Ryu, Goju Ryu, and Wado Ryu There are 3 aspects that are common in all styles in karate: kihon (basics), kumite (sparring) kata (forms) Kihon(basics) Each style has different katas, different ways of punching, kicking and grappling and blocking. all this is summarized in : |
