Kuk Sool WonKul Sool Won is performed for self-defense, healing, conditioning, competition and aesthetic purposes. Brief IntroductionMaster In-Hyuk Suh Founded in 1958 by master In Hyuk Suh, this Korean martial arts system is not limited to any single motive or discipline. Rather, it contains various traditions and techniques, ranging from ancient, prehistoric martial arts defense to modern-day defense such as gun defense and weapon improvisation. It can typically be characterized by having low stances and fluid, graceful motions. There are lots of emphasis on joint locks and pressure points. Kuk Sool Won is described as being a hard-soft style, which includes hard and forceful strikes with the circular and fluid movements. Literally translated phrase of Kuk Sool Won in the Korean langauge of Hangul is "National Martial Art". Practicing Kuk Sool Won can bring a deeper understanding of the Korean native martial arts in all aspects. History and OriginIt is important to note the situation of the Korean peninsula in the era that Kuk Sool Won was founded. At that time, since 200 years before, Korea and the Korean people had been seized by the Japanese empire, oppressed in all types of freedom and liberty, forced into slavery and torture. Practicing any korean traditional customs were strictly forbidden, even the langauge itself. Therefore, all the native korean martial arts masters were in hiding and all martial arts techniques and knowledge were scattered. Therefore in the late 1950's, In-hyuk Suh had begun the monumental task to organize and formulate the many scattered martial art techniques of Korea into a single system, which he named Kuk Sool. Now, it has established not only its own founded association but official academies in 27 different countries.
