KumdoKUMDO, The Way of the SwordHistory of Kumdo (when, where, why)Kumdo originated in Korea. It was born after world war II, when Japan's rule over the Korean Peninsula came to an end. The Koreans, who swore to never be over taken by a foreign military again, made martial arts a part of their everyday life. It became a requirment for both boys and girls practice the deadly arts of combat in their public schools. The Korean art of Kumdo was formed as a way to counter the Japanese art of Kendo, which is built on many of the same principles. As a matter of fact, some of the earlier founders of Kumdo claim that the two martial arts don't differ at all. Who Founded Kumdo?Haedong Kumdo, which originated at Mt. Backdo, was founded by the God Master Sul-Bong.He initiated the academy in order to accomplish and follow the beliefs of Buddhiam-Orientalism. The warriors who practiced the art called themselves SAMURANG. It is said that these SAMURANG were what made the Kokuryu dynasty so powerful. Basic Tenets of KumdoKumdo, which is over 3000 years old, teaches one to protect his/herself effectively with a broomstick, cane, umbrella, sword, etc. When practicing Kumdo, a person will most likely use Jukdo (4 split bamboo sword) and Bogu (head and body gear). One who practices Kumdo will learn a series of different overhead strikes/slashes, side slashes, under slashes, and under body strikes. Unlike many other martial arts, in Kumdo, one does not get a second chance. The one to land the first blow wins the fight. Under these circumstances, the statement "never underestimate your opponent" cannot be truer.
