Soo Bahk Do

Soo Bahk Do (literally: Hand Strike Way) Moo Duk Kwan is a martial arts discipline that originated in Korea.

It combines the native Soo Bahk Ki and Tae Kyun and the Chinese Northern and Southern style Kung Fu. Soo Bahk Do dates back 2000 years. It was reintroduced to the modern world by the Grandmaster Hwang Kee in 1945 when he opened his school Moo Duk Kwan. This fighting style mixed, with a backbone of philosophy, Moo Duk Kwan, has created an extremely dynamic martial art that is well-renowned in the martial arts community.

Grand Master Hwang Kee was first inspired to study the Martial arts in 1921 when he was seven years old. He saw a group of men engage in a dispute with another, lone, man and when they started attacking him he evaded and counter-attacked untill he was victorious. This show of agility and self-defense impressed young Hwang Kee so much that he decided then and there to become a martial artist. He studied every resource available and by the time he was twenty-two he was recognized as a master martial artist.

Moo Duk Kwan is the philosophy behind Soo Bahk Do. It is practied to develop every aspect of the self: intellect, body, emotion, and spirit. The principle behind combining a philosophy with a martial art is so that the combatant handles conflict in a mature, intelligent, forthright, and virtuous manner.
