Sumo

Definition

Sumo (相撲) is a competitive martial art originated in Japan. Two wrestler, called "rikishi" in Japanese, attempt to force each other out of dohyo, the circular ring where the competition is in progress, or to touch the ground with anything other than the feet. The tradition of Sumo is very ancient and includes many ritual elements until nowadays.

History of Sumo

Sumo is Japanese traditional sports, influenced by 'Ssireum' of Korea and Mongolia. Originally, ancient people predicted good or ill luck of farming as which team wins. The big body of sumo wrestlers reveals how wealth he is. Later, it settled as one of the necessary performance of the court, and was encouraged to warriors to learn. However, in "Edo" generation, the nation announced the prohibition order of sumo under the emperor's name. Sumo reappeared in 18th century and has built firm foundation of rule and law for over 300 years. Today, they organized Japanese Sumo League and manage professional sumo wrestling.
