Bunjil Director's Notes
Eight years ago I ventured to the top end of Australia to experience the spirit of Arnhem Land. For a short time, I immersed myself within the culture of the Indigenous Aboriginals. I remain in awe of their connection to and respect of the land and all that it offers. This is true of Indigenous cultures worldwide. Time as we know it is of no essence; life is so simple and yet so rich. Dance plays an important role in Indigenous Australian culture. Along with art, music and song, dance has always been used to tell a story. The dancers shared with you the story of the history of Indigenous Aborigines in Australia. We called this performance (Bunjil), meaning Eagle, the protector spirit. Bunjil, they say, has protected and guided his culture through many changes. It is a time for understanding and appreciating the oldest civilization known to man. This was their story.
