The BFG

FROM THE DIRECTOR . . .

"Just because we happen not to have actually seen something with our own little winkles, we think it is not existing."

•  Roald Dahl, The BFG

My elementary school couldn't get enough of Roald Dahl.   He was Dr. Seuss for grades 3-5.   Fantastic worlds were created through the gloriumptious sound of words like phizzwhizzer, humplecrimp, oompa-loompa, and whizzpopper.   Who could ever forget even the most minor character with names like, Mr. Grubbswitch or Mugglewump?   Each story was such a joy to read that we didn't mind all of the lessons Dahl imparted.

While most of Dahl's books teach us about personal responsibility, The BFG asks us to think about things more globally.   Our professor is the bumblingly eloquent, BFG who encourages us, through Sophie, to see with more than our eyes.   The quote from above is not an argument for blind faith.   Instead, we are encouraged to find more imaginative ways of perceiving what we know to be true.

The cast and crew of this production have been challenged to come up with creative ways to explore the make believe world of The BFG.   How can we create worlds that exist only in our imagination?   How do we make 5-foot middle school students towering giants? Like the BFG asking Sophie to believe in the mighty Crumpscottle, we encourage you to "see" the world this cast has spent the past few weeks creating.   We guarantee a whizzpopping good time!
