An Introduction to the Play and Playwright-

Jonathan Rand wrote his first play Hard Candy in 1997 during his junior year at the public high school Stanton College Preparatory School in Jacksonville, Florida. In 1998, Hard Candy won the International Thespian Play works competition, and was subsequently featured in the nationally distributed Dramatics magazine.

Within a year of the publication of his comedy Check Please, the play tied with Hard Candy as the second most-produced short play of the 2003-2004 season. In the 2006-2007 season, four of the top ten plays on the survey were penned by Mr. Rand: The Least Offensive Play in the Whole Darn World was #8, Hard Candy was #6, Check Please: Take 2 was #2, and Check Please topped the list as the #1 most-produced short play for the third consecutive season. Within the first two and a half years of its release, Check Please was produced in all 50 states, and in nine countries. All told, his plays have been produced by over 2,900 theaters.
