Greeting to all CAC Parent/Guardian,
Welcome to the 2006-2007 C.A.C. Physical Education Program. In our P.E. program your child will participate in a variety of activities that will promote physical fitness, movement, sport skills, sportsmanship and team cooperation. All physical education activities are designed to meet individual abilities and ensure success for all. You can help make your child’s P.E. an enjoyable experience by assisting me with the following procedures:

• Make sure your child dresses appropriately for P.E. White/Gray
T-Shirts, athletic shorts (shirts need to be long enough to cover abdomen), rubber soled Tennis/Basketball shoes provide the greatest safety and comfort, and are highly recommended. Swim suit, goggles and towel required.
• Students need to change back into regular school clothe after physical education.
• NO jewelry, phones, iPods, MP3’s, and watches.
• Students are encouraged to wear hats, sunscreen and bring water to all P.E classes.
• Rubber bands or Scrunches for long hair.
• Provide your child with a written excuse when she/he is to be excused from P.E. Every child will be expected to participate unless she/he has a note from home. Please explain the reason and the length of time your child will be out of P.E. Longer than two P.E. classes will require a doctor’s note.
• Lockers: Students will be assigned a locker in the changing rooms adjacent to the new gymnasium. Students will need their own combination locks and will required to use their P.E. locker to store clothes and valuable during P.E. classes. Students are NOT aloud to bring books, sports equipments, musical instrument, large bags and leaving valuables unattended in the locker rooms!
• Swimming: Swimming is an integral and required part of the C.A.C. physical education program. There will be two swim units (1st and 2nd semester!).
• Classes will run every second day – full block period (85 min!).
• Students will be expected to actively participate and follow class safety rules and expectations. Students who follow rules and expectations will receive positive reinforcement and given the opportunity to be P.E. student of the month.

THE FOUR PARTS OF A PHYSICAL EDUCATION LESSON
1. Warm-Up: The warm-up is a short 4-6 minute activity that is meant to raise the core body temperature and get the muscles ready for more vigorous activity.
2. Fitness Component: The fitness portion of the class is an activity that teaches students about how to lead a healthy lifestyle. Academic, as well as, movement activities are an important part of teaching fitness.
3. Main Lesson: The main lesson is where the teaching of the new skill takes place. A number of techniques: modeling or demonstrating, verbal descriptions, guided practice, posters, music, video and skill drills are used. The focus of the main lesson is three-fold; that is, to develop or continue to develop:
a) General motor abilities
b) Basic sport skills
c) Total body physical fitness
Games are used, not to establish a winner or loser, but to provide the children an opportunity to apply fundamental skills and knowledge learned in the lesson; to give the children an active, exciting, closing activity; and to give the child an opportunity to work cooperatively and socially within a team or unit.
4. Conclusion: This is where children walk, stretch, or are brought together for a general group wrap-up of the lesson. We understand that it is important that a child's body not just be brought to a sudden halt but that it is gradually slowed down.
Grading: Your child will receive four quarters physical education grades. Grades are divided into the following parts:
Fitness Performance/Time/Distance 20%
Participation Attendance/Dress/Behavior 40%
Performance Skills/Achievement/Improvement 30%
Cognitive Knowledge/Test/Peer Instruction 10%
The goal of all evaluation is not to compare your child to another, but to provide a tool through which you, as a parent, can monitor your child's social and physical growth.
Physical Education Portfolio:

Parents are sometimes surprised that Physical Education at CAC requires written work. Indeed, Portfolios for each student are kept with the P.E teacher to maintain all paperwork collected throughout the year. All handouts, quizzes, skills tests, extra credit, fitness focuses, health tips, units objectives and social skills sheets will be kept on file. The
Portfolios will be available for parents at conferences. Students are expected to keep their P.E. information in the Portfolios. The teacher will return the Portfolios to students at the end of the school year. Parents may review their child’s Portfolio at any time of the school year.

Intramurals:
Students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade at C.A.C. have the opportunity to participate in the intramural sports program. Intramurals are an outgrowth of the instructional program and involve activities, which permit further skill and knowledge growth. Students will normally meet during activity period (3:15 to 4:45 p.m.) on selected days (usually 3 days per week). A permission slip is required to participate.

Parent Communication:
I feel that it is very important to keep an open line of communication with our C.A.C. parents. Not only do we communicate home every six weeks through progress reports/report cards, but we also find it important to keep parents aware of what their children do from unit to unit in P.E. Parents are kept informed of our Physical Education Program and its happenings through various means. We send home a parent letter at the beginning of the year, and a P.E. newsletter every six weeks. P.E. articles are regularly placed in the "Bulletin Board," and please visit my web page at -----. We also send home physical fitness test reports twice a year.
Please feel free to email/call me with comments, questions, or concerns. We value your input and suggestions!
I look forward to hearing from you!
With thanks,
