Cairo has grown notorious for it's horrific traffic, choking smog and continuous din.  The argument could be made that the cause of this problem is the large number of cars and the nature in which they are operated in the city of Cairo.  The question must be raised: Is Cairo's traffic problem a logistic one or a cultural one? First the logistical edge must be addressed.

It has been estimated that there are approximately 4,500,000 cars in the greater Cairo area alone.  This number of cars insures that some logistical problems will arise.  It must be kept in mind that Cairo was never originally designed for massive urban movement.  Much of the infrastructure in Cairo is still not able to handle the massive amounts of traffic that the people of Cairo generate. While this edge of the problem is dire, there are things that are being done about it. To the Egyptian government's credit, they are always dumping large amounts of money into the improvement of existing major thoroughfares and the construction of new large highways to deal with overflow. This edge of the problem is being addressed. The other edge of the problem is a more difficult one to define and an even more difficult one to tackle.  It has been surmised that a major cause for the hideous nature of driving in Cairo can be attributed to the cultural environment.  Large scale Egyptian society seems to operate on the tenant of "dog eat dog".  It is not rare to see a young Egyptian aristocrat driving in an insane manner in a car worth fifty times what the average Egyptian family would make in a year.  Oddly enough, this behavior is tolerated.  If you're out on the open road in Cairo, and you aren't worth at least a few million, you had better watch out.  No one's going to give you an inch, or a millimeter as one would say in Egypt.  It's an eye for an eye out there.  If your car is small, then you can expect to be bullied by SUVs, busses and trucks. Someone with power will not make any allowances for you.  It is this author's opinion that this side of the problem is purely cultural. And sadly enough, nothing is being done about this.  Sadly enough, there might not even be anything that can be done about this.  

The general Egyptian public needs to first come to the conclusion that being in their fortresses of steel and rubber does, in no way, excuse them from adhering to the general kindness and warmness and beautiful friendliness that their culture is known for.

No es raro ver a un egipcio joven aristócrata manejar en una manera loca, con valor coche cincuenta veces lo que la familia egipcia media hace en un año. Increíblemente, esta conducta se tolera. Si usted está fuera en el camino abierto en Cairo, y usted no vale por lo menos unos pocos millones, tenga cuidado. Nadie va a darle una pulgada, o un milímetro como uno diría en Egipto. Es un ojo por un ojo allí. Si su coche es pequeño, usted puede esperar a ser intimidado por SUVs, autobuses y camiones. Alguien con poder no dará ninguna concesión. Es la opinión de este autor que este problema es cultural. Y tristemente, nada se hace acerca de esto. Tristemente, quizá no haya nada que se puede hacer acerca de esto.

El público Egipcio general necesita entender primero que cuando están en sus fortalezas de acero y caucho no pueden, de ninguna manera, dispensar de adherir a la bondad general y simpatía hermosa por la cual su cultura se conoce.
