Aire contaminada en el Egipto |
|

Egypt Air Pollution |
Fumes from Egypt's 1.2 million cars cause Egypt to be one of the countries with the most densely polluted air. The high lead content released by the fumes of the car is one of the main reasons for the amount of pollution. Besides the lead fumes from cars there are also fumes that are released from textile and smelting factories. For 25 years now the Egyptian government has been working with USAID (The United States Agency for International Development) to improve the air pollution in the whole country. Although change is slow things are improving. In 1997, USAID initiated a new Cairo air quality program, in working with the Government of Egypt, to reduce lead emissions from local smelters, institute a vehicle emissions testing and certification program, and introduce natural gas-fueled buses to reduce pollution from diesel cars. USAID is also supporting Egyptian efforts to convert gasoline vehicles to natural gas. To date there are around 40,000 cars using this cleaner fuel.
Other projects have been done by the Egyptian ministry in cooperation with USAID and many projects are still currently being done. Perhaps with the aid of agencies such as USAID and CAIP (The Cairo Improvement Project) the air pollution of Egypt may in time be eradicated. |
