CAC Wrestling- International School Invitational Tournament @ The American School of Dubai

January 31- February 2, 2019

CAC wrestling sent 12 wrestlers to compete at the international school wrestling tournament, hosted at the American School of Dubai- Zeina, Steffan, Je Heon, Jae Won, Kyu Jin, Hassan, Josiah, Omar, Daniel, Sergi, Ali, and Youssef. All were able to challenge themselves in tough matches on the ASD mats, except for Jae Won, who suffered a late injury and was not able to compete. 6 of 11 CAC wrestlers returned with medals: Stefan- Gold: Youssef- Silver: Zeina, Je Heon, Hassan, and Daniel- Bronze. 3 more CAC wrestlers competed in the championship rounds, putting 9 of 11 CAC wrestlers challenging for  medals.

The CAC wrestlers were well prepared for the schedule of 2-3 matches on day 1, and 2-4 matches on day 2, at a very competitive meet. The tournament format included multiple 8 man brackets with 2 groups of four wrestling a round robin on day 1 and crossover semi and final matches on day 2, some 4 man brackets wrestling a round robin on day 1 and semi and final matches on day 2, and some 3 man brackets wrestling 2 days of round robin matches. 8 schools brought 6 to 20+ wrestlers to fill weight brackets in 4 middle school divisions, 3 girls divisions, and multiple high school boys divisions from 100 pounds to heavyweights at 200 plus pounds. It was a very competitive tournament in most brackets. CAC wrestlers were in multiple close matches, many decided on points scored late in the third round, or on third round pins. The CAC wrestlers were well coached and prepared, with Stefan winning all round robin matches on day 1, then winning the semi final and final match on day 2, all by pin to win the gold medal. Youssef competed very well in winning all matches on day 1, some by pin and some by decision, then winning the day 2 semi final by decision, before losing the final in a second period pin to a very worthy opponent to finish with the silver medal. All bronze medal wrestlers- Zeina, Je Heon, Hassan, and Daniel competed in multiple tough matches to challenge opponents in their brackets before finishing with bronze medals.

Special thanks to CAC outside coaches Ahmed Gharabli and Essam Salem for the work with the CAC wrestling team.

It was a great meet at and outstanding ASD field house facility- 3 full mats, two for competition and one for warm up, in the spacious field house of 4 indoor basketball courts. The CAC wrestling team looks forward to the February 2020 international school invitational wrestling meet. Congratulations to all.
