Eagle Eye 10-04-2018

We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming Principal’s Coffee 10:30 am to 11:30 am Sunday, 7 October in the first floor common room. We will be talking about Student Wellness, Perfect Attendance, Talon Tickets and ES updates.

Lessons learned this week when an elementary family had a fire which began in a child’s bedroom. Thankfully all are okay and have shared that it’s best to keep the key handy to the outside door and keeping bedroom doors ajar mean that smoke doesn’t build in one place. At school we ask our students to move quickly and quietly away from buildings so as to be able to hear and to keep calm. A great reminder to talk to your child about different incidents, through stories and books, to support safety.

Fun Celebrations
We have a number of fun celebrations including two family picnics throughout the year for our division and we would like to share these with you. In previous years parents have paid for each of our celebrations, however this year and beyond the cost of our elementary celebrations will be covered by the school. For family picnics, you can choose to order a bbq meal or bring your own.

October 25 Halloween Celebrations

The Halloween Party, October 25, will be a time for the students to celebrate as a class/grade with their teachers (fun activities & food will be provided by our wonderful room parents). All students can come dressed to school as long as their costume will not interfere with movement or their learning. Parents, you are welcome to join your child at 2:00 pm to help them put on the finishing touches for their costume and then join us in watching students parade. We ask that you do not join before 2:00 pm as this will be a special time for the students with their teachers. After parading everyone will be invited to join our students in a fun dance. PreK and Kindergarten students will return to class for dismissal and Grade 1-5 will be dismissed from the ES lawn, 3:05 pm.

The PTO Halloween Spooktacular happens after school, from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm.

Important - inform your child’s teacher and/or transportation office (melghalban@cacegypt.org) of any change in dismissal plans, such as not riding the bus or another adult pick up.

Effects of Media on Child’s Development
There is a lot of information  regarding the effects of media on a child's development.  Because most children have access to technology and the internet, it is important the we educate ourselves on how exposure might affect a child.  Attached are two sites that I use as resources.

I use the KidsHealth site on a regular basis as it has information for parents, kids and educators on all subjects health related, but there is also specific information regarding  How Media Affects Your Child.

Another great resource  is Common Sense Media.  There are several categories that parents can access that can help us to navigate the appropriateness of movies and shows, safe and healthy online games and research regarding parent concerns.

Repeated Announcements

From the 7th to 11th October the CAC elementary school will be celebrating Global Math Week, the world’s biggest community mathematics event. The aim of the event is to unite ten million students around the globe in a shared experience of joyful uplifting mathematics. The ultimate goal of Global Math Week is to change the way the world sees math. We want to help our students appreciate math as joyful, relevant, meaningful and creative. Join us in celebrating the wonder of math!

- During this week at CAC there will be a number of different mathematical activities going on for students and families to enjoy. These include:

- During their math class that week, students will participate in the Global Math Week focus activity - Exploding Dots!

- A Math Trail will be set up around the elementary school grounds. Students and families can complete the tasks during recess or after school. Parents are encouraged to check out the math trail with their children during Family Math Night.

- A Problem of the Day will be shared with all classes each day to encourage mathematical discussion and reasoning.

Family Math Night, October 9, 3:45 pm to 5:00 pm. Will offer an opportunity for parents and students to enjoy mathematical games together. Come play math games with your child. Games develop fluency with math skills and problem solving. Experience the fun of learning through games!

Our Family Math Night games are intended to help build fluency in math in a fun and engaging way. You’ll find the rules and instructions for a wide range of math skills games using a variety of different resources, including playing cards and dice. We’ve assembled games for different skill levels ranging from Grades Pre-K through 5, all with an educational math twist.
