Principal's Welcome

Dear Parents,

Thank you for reading this week’s edition of the Middle School News and Views. With a short week before a well-deserved holiday weekend, we have had much to celebrate in the Middle School.

First and foremost, I would like to “bravo” all involved with the Support Staff Luncheon. It was beautiful to see the CAC school community come together and do something for the folks who work tirelessly behind the scenes, to make our day-to-day running of the school easier. It's great when students can come to school and leave feeling with a sense of joy. That happened this week, and it takes a ton of effort from all involved to make it happen. Well done to teachers Ms. Herrera, Ms. Knox, Ms. Gawdat, as well as to all of the Middle School, High School, and Elementary school students who donated food and helped out to serve the Support Staff. It was a terrific community event.

Today, we issued Trimester One Report Cards. Parents can log in to our online reporting system, SKYWARD to access the reports. Detailed instructions regarding how to access report cards were emailed to parents on Monday. Please let us know if you have any questions or if we can be of any assistance to you. You can also send an email to felduweini@g-cacegypt.org if you need any technical assistance. We hope that you will find these reports to be informative and encourage you to open up a dialogue with your children about their learning over the course of the first twelve weeks of school. While we know the grades are important “symbols of learning,” we believe that the essential conversations that take place between students and parents, should be focused on “what did you learn?” and not “what grade you got?” Do take the time to talk with your children about their learning experiences in their classes.
Please focus your attention on the Learning Traits that we report on separately from academic achievement. We firmly believe in developing these learning traits and that there is a direct correlation between these and academic success.

Looking ahead to next week, we will have the Winter Night of Music concert, the first concert of the year, this coming Wednesday, November 30th. The concert is a combined Middle School/High School affair and it akes place in the CAC Theater starting at 6:00 p.m. This should be a terrific night of entertainment and a showcase for the students who have been working hard and practicing on their instruments throughout the first trimester. We hope that many of you will turn out for an evening of music. I thank you for reading the News and Views, and I wish everyone a restful long weekend. We also want to wish all of our families who will celebrate the holiday this weekend, a very Happy Thanksgiving. The spirit of Thanksgiving embodies much of what is good about people – their desire to be together with family and friends, to give to one another, and to be grateful for the good things in our lives. Indeed, the following quote from William Ward captures what should be the spirit of Thanksgiving, “ Feeling gratitude and not expressing is like wrapping a present and not giving it.”

Courtney

MS Boys Volleyball Update

 Team Photo

Back in September, twenty Middle School boys stepped onto the volleyball court in an attempt to reinvigorate the Middle School boys volleyball program. Most of the athletes had never played competitive volleyball prior to the season, but all were smiling, eager, and willing. Under the experienced guidance of Coach Green and the diligent attendance-taking of Coach Leo, the boys quickly began to acquire the fundamentals of the game. In a clear sign of their determination to improve, nearly the entire squad signed up for the Gold Medal Squared Volleyball Clinic arranged by Coach Riddle. The team also benefited greatly from the Wednesday morning breakfasts prepared by the team moms. As the players began to cohere as a team, the coaches began to wonder just how good the squad might become as it prepared for the season-ending tournament.

On Friday, November 18, the Middle School Boys Volleyball team traveled to Hayah International Academy in New Cairo to play in the first Cairo International Schools (CIS) Middle School Boys Volleyball Tournament.
In the opening match of round-robin play, the CAC Red Eagles—eighth graders Omar Mostafa (captain), Brodie Leo (captain), Jackson Fraser; seventh graders Emmett Leo, Kurian George, Elias Aidi; and sixth-grade phenom, Yohan Koh—faced their toughest opponents of the day: the CAC White Eagles—Aidan Green (captain), Timothy Duggan, Youssef El Sharkawy; and seventh graders Michael Miller (captain), Sammy Kennedy, Youssef Wahba, Minjae Kim, and Adam Ramadan. Every point was hotly contested and both sides put together extended scoring streaks, but consistency of serving proved the difference as the Red Eagles squad ultimately prevailed: 25-19, 25-20.
In the second match, the White Eagles rebounded nicely, regaining confidence in their serves, leading from start to finish, and handily defeating the host Hayah Sharks: 25-15, 25-17.

In the final match of the day, the Red Eagles overcame a slow start to seal their overall victory in the tournament by defeating Haya: 25-12, 25-10.
As a result, the CAC Red and White Eagles finished in the top two spots in the CIS tournament standings. Both CAC squads played solid fundamental volleyball punctuated by moments of inspiration, demonstrated the sportsmanship expected of them while they wear CAC uniforms, and had lots of fun revealing and reveling in their new individual and team skills.
While wolfing down pizza for a post-tournament treat courtesy of our Athletic Director, Mr. Fitzgerald, players and coaches were in agreement that all would have liked to keep playing in an even longer season and, even more importantly, that they all intend to be back on the volleyball courts next fall!

Go Eagles!

Get ready for a very festive CAC Book Fair! This year, it will take place from December 4th to December 7th at the MS back courtyard, from 7:30 am to 8:00 pm! So leave your afternoons open and come attend some of the events we have in store for you from 3:20 pm onwards:
- Rania Hussein Amin, the author of the popular Farhana series will be hosting a book talk and signing.
- The MS/HS String Ensemble will provide us with a fabulous holiday-themed musical performance.

...and many more surprises!

To add to the fun, everyday from 3:00-5:00 pm, there will be arts and crafts, as well as yummy snacks and treats provided by the Booster Club’s Spirit Café. Look for our posters to see the detailed program of activities.

This year the book fair is all about the holiday season and our theme is to “Give the Gift of Reading,” so please send in books if you’d like to donate to schools in need and it’s also the perfect opportunity to do some holiday gift shopping for yourself as well.
