Peace Day at CAC

CAC recognized Peace Day today, as we do each year, with a full school assembly. Thank you to the parents who attended and to the students who performed. It continues to be critical, I believe, that we remind our students of their great good fortune of having the benefits of living under an umbrella of peace, and of their power to help others who do not have the same blessings. Thank you all for working to help CAC and CAC students live our mission of being “positive contributors to our community” and for talking about peace and Peace Day with your children at home. Special shout out to our amazing and flexible Performing Arts teachers: Mr. McCuaig, Mr. Murray and Mr Orion for making wonderful things happen on short notice. You can hear the CAC Peace Train Song here (via facebook)

Professional Development and Professional Learning at CAC this Week

We were extremely fortunate this week to have to Dr. Cindy Kern visiting Cairo to work with our Elementary Teachers as they are rolling out the Next Generation Science Standards as the backbone of our Science instruction in the Elementary School. Dr. Kern, from Quinnipiac University, spent four days in instructional sessions with our teachers discussing instructional concepts and pedagogical techniques for improved and deep learning of Science concepts from the new NGSS curriculum. Teachers participated actively, collaboratively, and collegially as they tackled some challenging learning. Great demonstrations of Lifelong Learning and of working to always improve our instruction at CAC.

Stepping Stones author and illustrator visit

The CAC libraries hosted Margriet Ruurs, Canadian author of Stepping Stones: A Refugee Family’s Journey.  Ms. Ruurs lives in Canada and is the author of 30+ books for children. Click here for a list of all of her books, most of which are at our ES library.

Ms. Ruurs was inspired by the stone art of Nizar Ali Badr, a Syrian artist. Mr. Badr lives in Syria and works with stones to create beautiful images. Ms. Ruurs saw his stone pictures and was inspired to sequence them into a story about a refugee family escaping the war in their country.

The visit included grade level presentations in the ES, a MS assembly, and a Skype interview between Mr. Badr with the third grade. The ES Arabic classes were inspired in turn to create their own stone art, which they enjoyed on our beautiful ES lawn.

Ms. Ruurs donates all the royalties from the book to charities in aid of refugees. Unfortunately, we were unable to locate books for sale in Egypt for this visit, but it can be purchased via Amazon and other online bookstores.
