Dear Parents,

Thank you for reading this week’s version of the News and Views. As you know, all our trips are returning today, and you will get a first-hand account of how much fun your child had.

Here are the link to the grade six Prime Trip websites, unfortunately, the grade seven and eight trip doesn’t have any photos to share due to the poor internet connection. Those photos will be shared with you in the morning announcement:

Photos from Gr-6 Prime Trip

On Monday, October 22nd we will have a drop-in session that will begin at 2:00 pm and will end at 5:00 pm. Each parent will get five minutes with the teacher. Please keep in mind that you will have to sign-in on the board outside the classroom and parents will be seen in the order they arrived. We expect that your son/daughter attends the conference with you on both days.

The Middle School runs an “arena style” conference format. The Middle School Auditorium, the MS Cafeteria, and classrooms on the Lower Level will be set up “arena” style, and tables will be organized by subject area (i.e., Math/Science, Social Studies/Language Arts). Conferences are structured to last no- more than five minutes to maximize the time available for all parents to meet with teachers. Teachers will keep track of the time and inform you when your seven minutes has come to an end. We also stagger the schedule by family’s last name to avoid overcrowding and excessive wait time, as well as to provide short breaks and lunch for teachers. The program is below:

8:00 - 9:50: Student’s last name A - K

9:50 - 10:00: Break for all teachers

10:00 - 11:50: Student’s last name L - Z

11:50 - 12:20: Lunch break for all teachers

12:20 - 1:50: Student’s last name A - K

1:50 - 2:00: Break for all teachers

2:00 - 3:45: Student’s last name L - Z

Thank you for your continued support of the Middle School.

In Partnership,
Courtney Bailey

Middle School Principal

CAT4 Information For Parents

Dear CAC Parents,

Cairo American College is focused on meeting the needs of every student.  In order to do this, educators need to have multiple sources of information.  This information tends to be data from teacher observations, student work, discussions, in-class assessments and activities, and external assessments, like the MAP, ACT, and SAT.

After studying ways to meet the needs of all students and provide appropriate levels of challenge, CAC has decided to administer an additional assessment in Grades 4 and 7:  The CAT4 (Cognitive Ability Test).  This assessment provides information about a student’s cognitive and reasoning abilities.  The information from this assessment tends to be valid for three years, so as a result, we selected Grades 4 and 7 for implementation.

Purpose:  The CAT4 will provide educators with information about a child’s cognitive and reasoning abilities (whereas the MAP shows students’ performance).  The CAT4 is not about school achievement, rather it provides an indicator of general ability and potential.  This information is helpful to correlate with in-class student performance and MAP indicators to create a more complete picture of a student.

Uses:  Educators will use this information to ensure that students are being challenged appropriately within classes and courses.  Parents will also receive a report showing their child’s score on the CAT4 which may help to support future educational planning.  Student performance on the tests would not affect their report cards in any way.

About the Test: The CAT4 is from the United Kingdom.  The test is divided into three 45 minute sections: Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, and Spatial Ability.  The entire test is taken on the computer.  You can read more about the test here.

Taking the Test:  The test will take place later in October.  Students will take different portions of the test on different days and a schedule has been created in consultation with classroom teachers in order to minimize disruptions. After testing, parents will be invited to an informational meeting in order to receive a copy of the results.

Results:  Two-parent information sessions will be offered on the following day and times:

Sunday 4th November at 8:30 am in MS115

Sunday 4th November at 4:00 pm in MS115

At this meeting, you will learn more about the test, what it measures, what it doesn’t measure, and how to interpret your child’s results. You will also receive a printed report of the results. Due to the sensitive nature of this type of data, we will not be releasing reports to students to bring home.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Selena Gallagher

Micah will be a guest speaker at CAC inspiring our students from October 16-17. We are inviting alumni and community to come have coffee, mingle and get inspired by one of CAC's very own on Wednesday October 17 at 12:15 in the Middle School Building Lounge (beside the Tech Office).
