IB Diploma Programme

Excellence, Challenge, and Growth: The IB at CAC

At Cairo American College (CAC), the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is open to all students who meet course prerequisites. Recommendations for IB enrollment are made by teachers, counselors, and the IB Coordinator based on students’ academic performance. Students make their IB course selections in Grade 10 during the spring semester.

Choosing the IB Diploma is the most rigorous academic path at CAC. It’s a rewarding two-year commitment that requires strong time management and dedication, both in and outside the classroom. Students are encouraged to be active in campus life but must balance extracurriculars carefully with IB demands.

Students may pursue the full IB Diploma or enroll in individual IB courses. Priority enrollment is given to full Diploma candidates when space is limited. All IB courses require completion of official IB assessments and exams.

The IB Diploma

Diploma students take six subjects: three at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL). HL subjects typically reflect a student's strongest interests and abilities. Course changes after initial enrollment are rare and require approval from the IB Coordinator and High School Principal.

In addition to their six subjects, Diploma students must complete:

  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

  • Extended Essay (EE)

  • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) requirements

Students who complete two Group 1 (Language A) courses with a score of at least 3 may earn a Bilingual IB Diploma.

Individual IB Courses

Students may also enroll in select IB courses without pursuing the full Diploma. IB coursework, whether HL or SL, strengthens university applications.

Mock Exams

Students taking IB courses may sit for mock exams to prepare for final assessments. Formats and requirements vary by course and level.

Building an IB Program

Students should first select their HL subjects based on strengths and future goals, then choose complementary SL subjects. All programs must meet CAC’s graduation requirements and be approved by subject teachers and the IB Coordinator.

School Supported Self-Taught (SSST) Language A

For students who speak a language not offered at CAC, SSST Language A (SL) is available. This self-paced course mirrors the Language A: Literature curriculum but requires strong independence and external tutoring support.
