ARABIC

Arabic A
This course is designed for students interested in Arabic with no prior experience. Learners are introduced to the language through a variety of activities that develop basic communicative competence: oral practice, conversations, dialogues, and written activities. Students have opportunities to demonstrate creative use of new vocabulary and structures through songs, games, presentations, and texts. The course introduces students to Arabic culture and life using a range of resources. It equally stresses the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The main objective is to develop students' basic communication skills in Arabic.
Materials and Texts: Multiple reading and listening materials.
Requirements: None.
Length of Course: One Year.

Arabic B
This course is for students who have completed Arabic A. It continues the proficiency-oriented approach, focusing on basic communicative competence and performance. The use of acquired structures and vocabulary is intensified, and the creative process of the language is emphasized. As fluency and familiarity with the structures increase, students can further manipulate basic elements of the Arabic language foundation to expand their vocabulary with a focus on communication ability and capacity. Students' vocabulary is enriched through multimedia resources. Arabic B is the second part of a three-year basic program and prepares students for Middle School Arabic C.

Requirements: Arabic A or placement test/teacher recommendation.

Arabic C
This course is for students who have completed Arabic B. It reinforces the proficiency-oriented approach with a focus on communicative competence and performance. The use of acquired structures and vocabulary continues intensively, with an emphasis on the creative language process. Fluency and familiarity with the structures enable students to manipulate basic Arabic language elements to expand their vocabulary. Arabic C is the third part of a three-year basic program, preparing students for High School Arabic 2 or 3.

Requirements: Arabic placement test or teacher recommendation.

Arabic 6
Designed for Arabic-speaking students who have completed Modern Standard Arabic coursework in Elementary School or equivalent levels. The primary objective is to enable correct use of structures, lexicon, and composition found in level-appropriate texts. Another objective is to reinforce linguistic competence through studying selected, engaging, and cultural texts. This proficiency-oriented course develops students' creativity in using the four language skills with an emphasis on literacy skills through authentic materials.

Arabic 7
For native speakers who have completed Arabic 6 or equivalent. This level intensifies the use of acquired structures and encourages the creative language process. It refines skills in structural and lexical competence, composition, and communication, developing these through literary and cultural texts. The main objectives are to develop proficiency in Arabic and intensify the creative process of language expressions.

Arabic 8
Students will enrich their Standard Arabic language skills through work units and resources that develop communicative competence: everyday situations, conversations, creative dialogues, oral presentations, debates, discussions, role play, media, reading texts, and essay writing. This level refines skills in structural and lexical competence, composition, and communication, developing these through literary and cultural texts. The main objectives are to develop proficiency in Arabic and intensify the creative process of language expressions.

FRENCH

French A
This course is designed for students beginning the formal study of French and requires NO prior knowledge of the language. The students are introduced to the language through a variety of techniques enhancing basic communicative competence: oral drills, conversations, creative dialogues, and written exercises. The opportunity to demonstrate competence of the new vocabulary and structures is given through the use of such activities as dialogues, oral presentations, computer projects, games, songs, videos, and listening activities. The students are introduced to French culture and life through a situational approach and a range of media presentations. The four skills of the language, reading, writing, listening, and speaking are all equally stressed: . The main objective of this communicative course is to develop the student's basic interaction in French.

French B
This course is a continuation of French A for students who have successfully completed level A or the equivalent. The same systematic communicative approach is continued in this language sequence. The use of the acquired structures is intensified and the creative process of language use is emphasized. As fluency and familiarity with the structures increases, the students will be able to further manipulate the basic elements of French grammar and expand their vocabulary. French B is the second part of a three-year basic program in French and prepares the students for entry into Middle School French C. The main objective of French B is to enable the student to converse in basic French at level-appropriate capacity with a sound, appropriate grammatical foundation.

FRENCH C
This course is designed for students who have already successfully completed a previous middle school program in French (French A and French B). In this course, students will continue to develop grammatical accuracy, and move from writing grammatically simple sentences to more complex paragraphs. Through dealing with everyday situations and understanding short texts and books, composition, as well as speaking, reading, writing and listening skills will be reinforced. Students will develop an awareness of the culture of the French-speaking world through multi-media presentations. Based on a placement test and/or the current teacher’s recommendation, students who complete this course successfully in Grade 8 may be placed in High School French 2 or 3 in Grade 9.

SPANISH

SPANISH A
This course is designed for students interested in Spanish with NO prior experience. The learner is introduced to the language through a variety of activities that develop basic communicative competence: oral practice, conversations, dialogues, and written activities. The opportunity to demonstrate creative use of the new vocabulary and structures is given through, songs, movies, game, presentations, projects and text. The student is introduced to Spanish culture and life through a range of media presentations including videos, music, reading, an interactive software program as well as bilingual and grade-level appropriate texts. The four language skills are equally stressed: reading, writing, listening and speaking. The main objective of this proficiency-oriented course is to develop the students' basic communication skills in Spanish.

SPANISH B
This course is designed for students who have successfully completed Spanish A. It continues to reinforce the proficiency-oriented approach and focuses on basic communicative competence and performance. The use of the acquired structures and vocabulary is intensified and the creative process of the language is emphasized. As fluency and familiarity with the structures increase, the student will be able to further manipulate the basic elements of Spanish grammar to expand his/her vocabulary with one objective in mind: basic communication. The student's vocabulary is enriched through multi-media presentations. Spanish B is the second part of a three-year basic program in Spanish and prepares the students remaining in the Middle School for entry into Middle School Spanish C.This proficiency-oriented course will continue to develop the student's communicative competence and strengthen creativity in using the four language skills with a sound grammatical foundation and a broadened vocabulary.

SPANISH C
This course is designed for students who have already successfully completed a previous middle school program in Spanish A and Spanish B. In this course, the student will continue to develop grammatical accuracy, and move from writing grammatically simple sentences, to more complex paragraphs. Composition will be reinforced, as well as speaking, reading, writing and listening skills, through dealing with everyday situations and understanding short written passages. Students who complete this course successfully in Grade 8 may be placed in High School Spanish 2 or 3 in Grade 9, based on a placement test and/or the current teacher’s recommendation.
